THE PHILIPPINE JEEPnEY

Public utility jeepneys (PUJs) are the main mode of public transportation in the Philippines, and millions of Filipinos rely on them for their daily commutes.

THE FIRST

The kalesa, a horse-drawn carriage, was a popular mode of transport during the Spanish colonial period. It was primarily used by the upper class and served as a symbol of status.

The START

After World War II, the United States military had a surplus of Willys and Ford jeeps that they no longer needed. These vehicles were left behind in the Philippines and were repurposed as a new mode of civilian transportation.

The traditional jeepney

The current main mode of transportation

in the Philippines.

It combined the practicality of the kalesa with the modernity of motor vehicles. They were designed to carry more passengers and were often adorned with vibrant colors and artistic designs, reflecting Filipino culture.
